My first opera “A Calamitous Bouquet” has been keeping me busy the past months. Let’s talk about sex, gender and identity and all its implications

Moritz Eggert’s premiere of “Die letzte Verschwörung“ at Volksoper Vienna this weekend was a mindblow. Never seen anything like it: so incredibly entertaining, witty, rich and unusual. And having Moritz answer all of my questions the next morning over coffee was the most wholesome part of it all. Thank you, Moritz for the unparalleled inspiration.

Favorite Zoom of the week

Iain Bell has been nothing but the most wonderful and enriching mentor on opera composition in the little time I have known him. Having been able to see his commission for the BBC Symphony+Choir come to life last night at London’s Barbican Theatre was a mind altering experience. I’m a deep admirer of the style and deeply grateful for being allowed to watch over the shoulders of this trail blazing artist.

Thanks to my absolute Superman mega friend @danielglaudemusic I am now a proud owner of a Clarinet in Bb and I will practice my ass off…. Thank you Dan @ Arielle <3

Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna National Opera) has officially started bringing plugged advertisements onto their stage. This one is for show sponsor ‘Renault’. And I am officially not having it. No. Bye. First time in my life I walked out after intermission.

These are just three of the 8 brilliant and stupidly talented kids in an ensemble of over 30ppl that I had the distinct honor to be Music Director for in the past six weeks. With a heavy heart I’m leaving. As a little goodie on my way out I wrote a super super super difficult four part jazz harmony tune for them and at today’s rehearsal they NAILED IT. Manhattan Transfer Level - but barely 15 years old. I wish I had had half of their talents when I was that age. To you four and everyone else: thank you for being such wonderful souls. May our paths cross again. Love. J

Getting a very Christmas-y pit experience this year. Premiere rocked

‘Yes. Yes yes yes yes yes’. The closing note of the video and of my heart. Half a year of relentless and incredibly heart wrenching work has come to an end. The musical stands on two feet. Having composed it from the bottom up is not what keeps it on its feet though. It is the incredible and unforgivingly talented cast that took my noteheads and pushed them over the finishing line. I feel nothing but humble, deep gratitude to the exhilarating team that has taught me so much, inspired me, carried me, made me cry and laugh sometimes in the span of five minutes. With an all too sudden ending, I remain indebted to you forever: Kat, Yasmin, Verena, Dawn, Stephanie, Jessica, Maddie, Jennifer, John, Jenny, Adian, Isaac, DaShaun, Justin, Gale, Paul and Wayne. And the orchestra. And my assistants. And so many more. Let your heart sing, and let it tell you what’s right. Love, joe
